I’ve tried to narrate an emotional experience in Sailor Moon in the Realm of Hades (2016) by enacting the anime character Sailor Moon and her quest to save the universe from intergalactic threats. This enactment involved an isolated light, restrictive palette and disrupted perspective along with a limited number of props in use.
There are times we find ourselves in a realm of “shades”. In these phases, we sometimes feel compelled to “follow a light”. Sometimes, however, this light can become as suspect as the shades – interchangeable, even – and the quest for resolution becomes a means to an end. In this sense, transformation can be seen as futile as it is desirable, yet we are still compelled to achieve it.
