Mestiza/Mestizo (2022)

Mestiza/Mestizo (2022) is a photographic diptych produced for a solo exhibition of the same name at Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba, Queensland from 18 July – 6 September 2022.

Mestiza/Mestizo speaks to identities that are conceived in binaries, such as race, sex, and gender. However, the minimalist style of the diptych can stress the fragility of these binaries. For example, Kleine’s physical appearance and the piña cloth that drapes across their shoulders are focused to highlight the unstable attributes that characterise their identity.
