Mestiza/Mestizo (2022) is a photographic diptych produced for a solo exhibition of the same name at Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba, Queensland from 18 July – 6 September 2022.

Mestiza/Mestizo speaks to identities that are conceived as hybrids. For instance, a person who is a “mestizo” is defined by racial hybridity. Moreover, the title suggests a mixture of binaries, such as male and female. However, the work incorporates elements that could subvert such conceptions. For instance, the alampay – a traditional garment worn in the Philippines – emphasises the physical and artificial associations of the identities suggested to question their veracity. Without it, would there be a person of Filipino descent? Would there be a man, woman, or someone else?
