Sticky Rice (2013-2016)

Sticky Rice (2013-2016) was developed during university as a collection of documentary photographs. The project depicts Kleine interacting with the Australian national flag in various images. The project raises questions about the ways we make and connect meanings, such as the connections we make between people and physical objects.

“Sticky Rice” is a play on the type of rice or dishes of the same name which is popular in many Asian cultures. There are many iterations, such as suman in the Philippines. The connection between the food and the project stems from its “sticky” or malleable quality – a loving euphemism for work interested in cultural connections.
